Legal Requirements & Product Compliance
Anyone who produces, packages, or distributes food must ensure that the packaging used is suitable for the intended contact with food and complies with applicable legal requirements. These include, among other things, specifications for food contact materials, requirements for packaging and packaging waste, and the approval of packaging. This page provides a concise overview of key topics related to food packaging, as well as information on the PPWR:
PPWR – EU- Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
What does PPWR mean?
The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) is the EU regulation on packaging and packaging waste. It sets out new requirements for packaging and affects various companies throughout the supply chain.
The individual requirements and obligations will come into effect gradually or will become applicable at different times.
At the same time, the EU continues to work on the specific details of individual requirements. Definitions, assessment methods, technical specifications, and documentation requirements are continually being supplemented by additional regulations, guidelines, and standards.
Therefore, not all details have been definitively clarified at this time.

FAQs to legal requirements & product compliance
You can generally obtain available declarations of conformity, product specifications, and other supporting documentation from your packaging supplier. Always request the documents on a per-item basis and specify the exact intended use.
In general, the company responsible for placing the packaging on the market under Austrian regulations is obligated to comply. This could be, for example, a manufacturer, importer, packager, bottler, retailer, or mail-order company. It should be documented and verified whether a supplier has already obtained a preliminary license.
A declaration of conformity—also known as a Declaration of Compliance or DoC—confirms that a material or article complies with the relevant regulations. It may include information about the manufacturer, the material, the applicable legal basis, restrictions on use, testing conditions, and suitability for specific foods.
Food contact materials are materials and articles that come into direct or indirect contact with food. These include, for example, jars, bottles, cans, plastic containers, lids, closures, gaskets, and certain packaging coatings.
